Letter from the Editor (Hey that's me!)
After two years of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, this 2021-2022 academic year has called for rebirth of a more diverse SPU campus culture. For virtual students, this was their first dive into college life as part of an in-person community post-quarantine. For many of us, quarantine was abrupt, stressful, long, and extremely isolating. But given the opportunity to meet in-person after such an extended period brought about challenges, especially around mental + physical health and safety on campus.
Despite these post-quarantine challenges, SPU students took root and began to flourish—as you can see documented throughout this annual publication. This year was about hope coming back to SPU Campus, and with hope, a call to action to challenge existing SPU policy and enact real change. For most, this was a time to rebuild connection back into community, culture, and classrooms.
For me, this year was a season of transformation and working to achieve my dreams. I proved to myself and my team that we are capable of growth, change, and transformation. My time spent as Editor-in-Chief for Cascade, and President of the SPU AIGA board will be treasured indefinitely for the valuable lessons and community these leadership positions have brought me.
This publication could not have been possible without the wonderful Cascade Staff whom I deeply thank for sticking with me throughout the creation process. With that said, a huge thank you to Vivian + Kati for your dedication to visually capturing SPU Campus life. To Sana + Michael, for daring to dream in full color in the design of this publication. To Sophia, for managing to balance budgets for both Cascade and the Falcon. To Riley, for continuing the Cascade legacy as Editor-in-Chief for the 2022-23 school year. To Jenna, for chasing the spark of life on campus and pinning it down in prose. And lastly, to our advisor, Rachell Sumpter, for believing in me as a leader and supporting the ambitions of this team.
If anything, this publication is proof that if there is life, there is a way. I hope you reflect upon this collection of memories and witness the unwavering, resilient spirit of the SPU community.
